Lazy Reflections

Painted Turtle, Doughnut Island, Toronto IslandsThe first painted turtle of 2008 basks on a log in the strengthening sunlight of late March.  There’s still ice on the water at this point, and I’m always amazed that they can come out of hibernation at a time when full winter paddling gear is still required.

Gloves, pogies, paddling jackets and PFDs are de rigueur so early in the season, but these guys seem quite fine with the still-painfully cold water.  The absence of any vegetation is apparent in the reflected colours of the water: 100% brown, without a stitch of green.
